Firstly, I do not want to go to the extent of labeling the UN as a tool
of the Catholic church. Secondly, Navi Pillay (an ethnic Tamil) is a
South African who has lived through apartheid and succeeded despite the
odds. I would think that she would better understand the plight of
displaced people. Thirdly, while I think the LTTE represented Tamil
chauvinism at its worst, I do not believe, not even for a moment, that
Sinhala people are saints. The first casualty in a conflict is truth,
and both warring sides have been less than honest about killings by the
thousands.

Regardless of which party is truly guilty, the fact is that there are
now thousands of internally displaced people, and their situation is
getting really grim by the day. These are the people that caught in the
crossfire in a government designated "safe zone" (there are shell marks
here). In hindsight, people would have been better off staying in an
unsafe zone.

There does need to be an international investigation into the number of
dead - estimates are in the upwards of 20000. Such large numbers cannot
be explained by LTTE fire alone, there had to be heavy artillery
involved. If the UN and India cannot be trusted in the inquiry, maybe
Japan (non-Catholic, non-violent, but Buddhist/Shinto) should be
entrusted with the task. The task will probably take years, but the
truth needs to be known, particularly the role of Gen. Fonseka. It
appears as though Gen. Fonseka might have had a change in perspective
from that of a professional soldier to that of someone wanting to settle
scores at a personal level. All this after an assassination attempt. To
me, this is a no no.

That the SL government is now dragging its feet is a concern. Is it
really concerned about the welfare of its citizens? Is it even
interested in a political settlement? To me, the first order of business
is to get medical attention to displaced people, and then working a
political settlement.
