If you aren't a tobacco user now I would go for something mild... Macanudo
Hampton Court or Hyde Park, or maybe a Fuente 8-5-8 or Chateau Fuente. If
you are a cigarette smoker or use smokeless tobacco you can probably handle
whatever looks good to you.

As far as lighting and smoking the thing. I guess some people are real
caught up on formality... but I'm not. I just find the cap, when you look
at a cigar you will see what I mean by cap, and cut the end. If you cut
beyond the cap the wrapper might come off... not the end of the world...
I've smoked cigars with wrapper peeling, but it isn't what you are trying
for... so don't cut all the cap off. You can use a cigar cutter, or a
knife, or anything that will cut. I've used my teeth. Alternatively, you
can buy a little punch type cutter that takes a plug out of the end of the
cigar. If you buy from a tobacconist or cigar bar or whatever you can ask
them to cut the cigar for you. No big deal. Just don't cut the whole cap
off and you are smoking.

As far as lighting, I probably don't do this "right" either, but it works
fine for me. Hold the cigar, after you've cut it, in one hand... and your
lighter in the other. Put the cigar at a slight angle into the flame, and
turn the cigar around and around to evenly "toast" the end. Sometimes I can
get the whole thing going this way... but usually after I toast the end I
just stick the cigar in my mouth, hold the flame about 1 inch from the end
of the cigar, and puff and roll the cigar until it is lit evenly all the way
around. I hold the cigar for about 30 seconds and look at how pretty it
looks... all lit up nicely like that... and then I smoke it :)

I think there is protocol for how fast you should smoke as well. I ignore
it. I smoke as fast or slow as I want to smoke. To me, some cigars taste
better when you really get down on them, and others are better smoked more
slowly. Just puff the thing and you will have no problems. If you are a
non-tobacco user take it easy at first... once you get rolling it just comes
naturally.

I don't inhale cigars either, ever... and I am a cigarette smoker. If you
don't smoke, I suggest you avoid inhaling as well. For that matter, I
suggest you avoid inhaling a cigar in any case... but some people do inhale
the things. You might want to try inhaling just a tad bit and see for
yourself. You don't have tastebuds in your lungs though... and you get
nicotine from cigars from the inside lining of your mouth... so I see no
point in inhaling the things. But if you enjoy inhaling by all means do so.
The whole point it to enjoy the cigar!

I think there is also a protocol for how much of the cigar you should smoke.
I've even heard people say you should never smoke beyond the band. BS.
When you get near the band, carefully pull it off. At this point the cigar
should be warm, which loosens the glue and allows the band to come off
fairly easily without tearing the wrapper. I don't usually take the wrapper
off until this point, unless it is just so loose that it is falling off.
Smoke the cigar as long as you wish. If it is a good cigar, I will smoke it
untill I can't hold it anymore, until the burning pain in my fingers is too
much to bear. If it is a great cigar, I will stick a pin in it and smoke it
much like some folks like to smoke a certain illegal product. Those great
ones I will smoke until there is almost nothing left. If the cigar is just
ok

I hope you enjoy your first cigar, and your 50th, and your 1000th... and on
and on!
