Wonderful interpretation, and I see where you get the stuff, but I
always thought this song was about dying. My thoughts are below yours,
sorry about how long a post this makes.

I agree that it's making a setting, but I believe it is setting up a
surreal, contemplative environment, and the pace of the song supports this.
Stirring your coffee is generally done in a slower manner than other, cooler
beverages. I think "spoon in spoon" means that God is wrapping himself
around you to take you away.

As someone else pointed out, the gate is really the gate to heaven. The
way is your journey through life, during which you find out the answers to
many of life's questions. Then, God revelas himself to you, and you find
out that all you have figured out is wrong, and you now see the truth.

Agreed on Jesus. I think an alternative interpretation would be this is
the Old Testament. "From hand to hand, wrist to the elbow" would represent
the creation of Adam (and humankind) by God as painted by Michelangelo on
the Sistine Chapel's ceiling. Red blood sand, brings to mind the exodus
from Egypt. Then Jesus is created and crucified. Is Dave doubting God's
intentions?

I think Dave sees the humor in how important we make our lives out to
be, but it's insignificant with respect to the rest of the world and our
soul's immortal existence. Humor eases the pain.

Agreed.

Dave's doubt of God's intentions has been erased by the truths shown him
as he is dying.

Throughout life, some move ahead in gaining God's favor, while others
lag behind. Mentioning minutes and hours so quickly makes me think of how
quickly time is passing, in the grand scheme of things. The balloon is the
narrator's soul, going up to heaven and then vanishing, just like watching a
rogue helium balloon disappear at the county fair (and, from my experience,
I always watch the balloon while other, generally more entertaining things
go on right in front of me...maybe Dave's making a social or personal
comment?). God's shedding a tear as he's calling one of his own to him.

The narrator's finally at the gates to heaven. I think this verse is
about being judged at the gates. Or it may be Satan and other undesirables
telling him that everyone sins so have a good time and don't worry about the
consequences.

I couldn't agree with you more. We spend too much time bickering about
petty things and not realizing how good it is to be constantly bombarded by
the best lyricist of this era.
