| An "x" is drawn in the middle of a page of the 1999 Penguin Classics Edition of Don DeLillo's White Noise.
The first three, sometimes four, words (excluding articles and prepositions) that intersect the lines of this "x" from its cross are fed into Google's Usenet index, which dates back to 1981. (Thanks to Bernadette Mayer's "X on Page 50 at half inch intervals.") On even-numbered days, the most recent Google entry is retrieved, using Google's "sort by date" function. On odd-numbered days, the first Google entry to appear is retrieved -- anything from 1981 to the present. The Usenet posting is copied to Starve.Org and linked to this page. (No porn.) A new posting is included every week -- an archive of radiant rants, habits, and hobbies mundane everywhere except on specialized Usenet bulletin boards. |

OCTOBER 5, 2008: "Must See! Harold Covington engaging in some revolutionary 'resistance'!" (from alt.conspiracy) "Amongst every lope under the joss a detachable bystander sank. A misunderstanding following an exercising, and round each ranted a shallow resettlement specification -- no, enough, an effluvium, whatever they had reclaimed depending no ensign opposite a stuff, notwithstanding no horseback. You crooned, albeit before we had the recusant. You shall disdain my story, like they organised it to rearrange me. It has not been a slender welcome."
SEPTEMBER 29, 2008: "Christ the WAY" (from soc.religion.unitarian-univ) "This was clarified by Jesus in the Parable of Nicodemus in that you see the leaves moving but what makes them move you cannot see (but perceive). Hardly anyone knows its application. Leaves are men, and what makes them living is the spirit of God, which you cannot see but perceive. Have you seen a dead man speak or raise his finger?"
SEPTEMBER 22, 2008: "NEW VOY. Guerdon. 78/86 (R) P/T, C, S, J; A/U" (from alt.startrek.creative) "She did not, however, enjoy the quiet, particularly knowing how that family could be, and especially without the comfort of a rumbling engine or beeping systems beneath her."
SEPTEMBER 15, 2008: "Re: OT: Science project fabrication ideas?" (from rec.motorcycles.dirt) "Excluding any good eureka moments, we'll just try to pull them all out with pins attached to a common string, but that feels so weak."
SEPTEMBER 8, 2008: "My gameday experience 9/17/2006" (from alt.sports. football. pro.sea-seahawks) "They are rather pessimistic at times, too, and completely out of touch with what is going on. I have thought about turning around and offering to High Five these guys, but I am always worried I will break them."
SEPTEMBER 1, 2008: "The Pen and The Brain" (from alt.support.depression. manic) "'This morning? Coffee. Other times milk, sugar, a baby-sitter for his niece.' She tilted her head, a little baffled, 'Once he wanted to borrow my bonsai.'"
AUGUST 25, 2008: "Re: Ultra Athletes and Antioxidents" (from rec.running) "'These are not laid-back people,' Applegate says. A high percentage of ultra-endurance athletes are obsessive compulsive, according to Applegate, who contends that they use the challenge of mega-distance as an avenue where they can pursue and control their worlds."
AUGUST 18, 2008: "He was declared medically dead - A remarkable report" (from halfthekingdom@googlegroups.com) "I will appear to you whenever I have a message for you, and I will appear in the form of dreams."
AUGUST 11, 2008: "heavygear-digest V3 #566" (from rec.games.mecha) "I've been filing away at stuff for almost 3 hours now, and I just realized something: Aren't Spitting Cobra torsos supposed to be rounded? I have a squarish one, which makes me think I got the wrong torso. (Which might also explain why I can't find enough room for the rocket pack and the arms don't fit in the shoulder holes)."
AUGUST 4, 2008: "Grant Steven, an Apologist for Chemical Fertiliser" (from swfoodgroup@googlegroups.com) "I have literally used tons of blood and bone in my growing career and although I think it is an excellent fertilser, now just the mere thought of it makes me feel sick."
JULY 28, 2008: "[all-xf] NEW: Unquiet Grave 2 of 2 by mimic117" (from alt.tv.x-files.creative) "In spite of the occasional clutter in his apartment, he'd never yet had to shovel his way to the toilet. And he was getting damned tired of having to do it now. . . . Right now, his insides were attempting to generate heat by quivering like Jell-O in an earthquake."
JULY 21, 2008: "Handicap Digest # 3669" (from bit.listserv.l-hcap) "I can say from personal experience that being stuck in an electric chair on the fourth floor is scary."
JULY 14, 2008: "Progressive Muscle Relaxation Exercises <07/14/08>" (from alt.support.anxiety-panic.moderated) "Perhaps you can imagine yourself as if you were outdoors on a warm and pleasant day. Do not touch yourself."
JULY 7, 2008: "Portland Festival (long & late)" (from rec.juggling) "I'm amused by her costume and character of a French shepherdess -- an image from a Rousseauian mythic past that never was -- entertaining her sheep with precision baton juggling. Her batons have ribbon tied in bows to one end, vaguely like Miss Bo Peep's staff as portrayed in old-fashioned children's books. . . . Mr. String and I talk about the respective obsessions that overcame us at midlife and changed our worlds. We agree it is much more fun than merely getting a sports car or finding religion."
JUNE 30, 2008: "Share International magazine: June 2008 issue (long)" (from talk. religion.newage) "The atmosphere was pleasant, in spite of the very cold weather. A man full of wrinkles and no teeth, in a black corduroy suit with a red scarf, was busy the whole time, talking to and encouraging bystanders to get involved in the demonstration, and he kept agreeing enthusiastically with the speakers. He seemed a little drunk and said that he was a 'Hagenees' (humorous term for an inhabitant of the Hague) and later that he was a 'Rotterdammer' (inhabitant of Rotterdam). Was he a Master?"
JUNE 23, 2008: "ADBFest 97" (from alt.drunken.bastards) "I seem to recall banging on the door for an extended period of time, then leaving because no one would answer."
JUNE 16, 2008: "SG5 - Under Pressure - MacTaggart/Svaboda" (from stargateskywatch@googlegroups.com) "'Now Jamie MacTaggart, don't go tellin' tales on me.' She mock- threatened him with a wooden spoon. 'And donnae think you're getting out of that lecture, young man. I've been assured by Ms. Svaboda that you won't be working a full day. So, if you want your dinner tonight, you'll have to suffer through an accounting.' At the calculating look on his face she added, 'And I'm making your favorite.'"
JUNE 9, 2008: "Re: PLEASE TAKE THE CORPORATOCRACY/SOCIALISM/ COMMUNISM thread elsewhere." (from alt.support.shyness) "I really wish you'd compare some of the things you've written in the last couple of days with the things you were going through during your 'cult experience.'"
JUNE 2, 2008: "jwexpress_0727.txt" (from alt.religion.christian.baptist) "In one passage, you will find Him getting tired and needing sleep. MAY 19, 2008: "The Last Deception" (from alt.tv.x-files.creative) "Mulder had glanced at Mrs. Scully and then back to Scully. He had actually understood what this woman was saying. Unlike the time when Bill had told him what he thought, Mulder knew Mrs. Scully spoke the truth. He was aware that he had nodded blankly as he approached Scully's bed and took her hand. He was conscious when he told her that her mother was right. Mulder heard Scully's pleas and he walked from the room."
MAY 12, 2008: "Re: Something 'off' here" (from life-church@googlegroups.com) "I was shocked by some of the confessions and actually wonder how many wackos the site is attracting (other than all of us I mean). It made me feel very uncomfortable -- especially some of the confessions. Could they not just speak to Jesus about all of this?"
MAY 5, 2008: "Re: TELEVISION" (from soc.culture.usa) "Last night while I was watching an albatross, not my 15 yr. old Sanyo TV set, a real albatross, on the Sanyo, feeding her young by regurgitating plastic into the youngster's mouth, or more exactly the young albatross was removing the contents of its mother's stomach as the mother regurgitated for her offspring, another scene showed a group of young biologists examining the stomach contents of a young albatross that died on his nest waiting for momma albatross to arrive with more food. He had so much plastic in his stomach there really was no more room for food! He was full. Fed up with eating plastic. So he died waiting for his albatross parents to bring him more food to eat."
APRIL 28, 2008: "Re: JFK - Vietnam" (from alt.conspiracy.jfk) "You can't put men with guns close together and expect anything else."

APRIL 14, 2008: "NYT/Cavett: Memo to Petraeus & Crocker: More Laughs, Please" (from alt.politics.bush) "I can't look at Petraeus (his uniform ornamented like a Christmas tree with honors, medals and ribbons) without thinking of the great Mort Sahl at the peak of his brilliance. He talked about meeting General Westmoreland in the Vietnam days. Mort, in a virtuoso display of his uncanny detailed knowledge (and memory) of such things, recited the lengthy list (Distinguised Service Medal, Croix de Guerre with Chevron, Bronze Star, Pacific Campaign and on and on), naming each of the half-acre of decorations, medals, ornaments, campaign ribbons and other fripperies festooning the general's sternum in gaudy display. Finishing the detailed list, Mort observed, 'Very impressive!' Adding, 'If you're twelve.'"
APRIL 7, 2008: "FANFIC: Milestones" (from alt.toys.transformers) "Josie and Todd rushed forward and gaped. The tranquil view outside was now scarred by the presence of flying, giant robots."
MARCH 31, 2008: "Open a New Door" (from alt.tv.x-files.creative) "She stood up, unable to sit on the horrid couch anymore. Walking slowly over to the picture window, she crossed her arms and continued to mull over the maddening events. Why did this have to happen now? Things were . . . fine (well, except for my cancer). No matter, she liked things the way they were. But."
MARCH 24, 2008: "DargonZine Volume 21, Number 1 (long)" (from rec.mag. dargon) "The gatehouses leading into Magnus had been opened, and townspeople, armed with butcher knives, bill hooks, and blacksmith hammers were swarming out alongside garrison troops wearing royal colours. She threw herself backwards and the heavy spiked orb swished in the air bare inches from her face. 'Yield, damn you!' the Beinisonian Empress Mother shouted. 'The crown is mine.'"
MARCH 17, 2008: "B&B Friday August 11 1995" (from rec.arts.tv.soaps.cbs) "At the Forrester guest house Connor tells Maggie that he had a good time. When Maggie says she did too, Connor tells her that he is confused about something he saw while he was dancing with Jessica. 'What did you see?' Maggie asks. 'You and Dylan were at the table, and you were kissing. You and your daughter's boyfriend -- what's that about?'"
MARCH 10, 2008: "An Eye For An Eye (3)" (from alt.tv.x-files.creative) "Maybe they ordained it that way, or maybe she simply didn't want to remember. She was so relieved to have been brought back from an early death, brought back by the love of her mother, only to have discovered that damn chip in the back of her neck. Then the terror started."
MARCH 3, 2008: "New: Voy.: Star Trek Mirror Universe Part 2 Chapter 2 K/T" (from alt.startrek.creative) "Torres felt a chill run up her spine as she thought back at what she had just witnessed. That might very well be her faith in the near future."
FEBRUARY 25, 2008: "Re: ::: The City of Light :::" (from alt.alien.visitors) "These calls would take the form of symbolically encrypted snippets of communication; mystically and cryptically embedded in music, art, the written word and various dramatic presentations. These deeply symbolic messages will be embedded by those awakening to others of us who've also embarked. In any event, when the City was completely assembled, it began to rise from the surface of the (another?) planet and began to glow from within."
FEBRUARY 18, 2008: "Re: Your future without a soul" (from alt.philosophy) "If you are building your body, for example, the body is not aware of what is happening."
FEBRUARY 11, 2008: "Re: Disaster Scenarios and Appropriate Responses" (from abc_politics_forum@googlegroups.com) "Be on the side of the authorities, become trusted, and look for ways to escape and help others escape."
FEBRUARY 4, 2008: "CNN Archive 001" (from The-Cthulhu-News-Network@ googlegroups.com) "I thought it was candy because they put candy in your ice cream to make it a treat. So I said, 'OK, well, I'll just put it in my mouth and get the ice cream off of it and see what it is.'"
JANUARY 28, 2008: "YASD: Giant dragon turtle" (from rec.games.roguelike. adom) "She was unnaturally aged by 12 years. She was the head of the thieves guild. She was able to see invisible things. She asked for 7 divine interventions."
JANUARY 21, 2008: "Re: How airplanes fly (long)" (from rec.arts.sf.science) "If that was not your intent when you were ridiculing my position that a low pressure region formed over the wing is responsible for most lift production, I apologize. . . . You are willing to agree with others that the requirements of momentum balance don't require air to move below the wing, but you won't agree to that with me. Odd."
JANUARY 14, 2008: "Re: There are only 12 Apostles--in the first generation of apostles" (from alt.bible.prophecy) "I would conclude that 'many are called but few are chosen' will continue right through the End of the Age and the Millennial Kingdom, as proven by Satan's ability to still incite a rebellion when the dragon is released after the thousand years."
JANUARY 7, 2008: "THE RUINS : Stephen King's Best Beach Book of Summer 2006" (from gimik@googlegroups.com) "This involved dice, shaken in a cup. The rules were explained to him in Greek, which certainly must've contributed to how complicated they seemed. Eric bravely rolled the dice and passed the cup, but he never managed to understand why he won on some tosses and lost on others." 2007 Archive, "The Usenet Project": Pages 173-231 of White Noise 2006 Archive, "The Usenet Project": Pages 116-171 of White Noise 2005 Archive, "The Usenet Project": Pages 59-115 of White Noise 2004 Archive, "The Usenet Project": Pages 3-58 of White Noise |
