I recently purchased 600 lbs. of *cracked* grain in 50 lb. bags from a
commercial brewery that went out of business (maybe that's why they went
under!! ;^} ). The bags were from Briess Malting Co. and were labeled
"Brewers Grist". While I'm fully aware of the undesirable effects of
storing cracked grain, I couldn't pass up the $0.15/lb. price.
So, to contradict 2 assumptions; 1. Distributors *do* sell cracked
grain, and; 2. Commercial brewerys (some)*do* use it.
I am (obviously) very interested in this thread, so if anyone has any
real data on the shelf life, it would be great.
