WINTER 2019 Strategies of Alterity: Sci-Fi, Other Worlds, Space

CLASS OUTLINE (Some items are subject to change)

Week 1: Drafting Space Opera
Tu - Define the terms - which science-fiction? - Pre-production & ideation work
Th - Other planets, landscapes, terrain Workshop: World building, landscapes, and plates - using photography and Photoshop to generate plates for conceptual-design. (students will need to bring to class original landscape or enviornment images for use during the workshop)

Week 2: Communication
Tu - Alien languages, cultures, relations
Th - Workshop: animating pre-production assets (students will need to bring to class one scan of a storyboard or concept art for use during the workshop).

On Thursday 1/17, the opening reception and talk for A Glimmer Exodus Sketchbook will be from 5pm-7pm at the gallery at Calit2 in Atkinson Hall.

Week 3: Terra
Tu - Evolution vs. Decentralization of Humanity
Th - Workshop : Set-extension - using digital tools to composite shots (students will need to bring to class at least one original still image and one motion-picture clip for use during the workshop).

Week 4: Critiques
pre-production/concept-design pitch

Week 5: Revolution
Tu - Space is the Place - The Cosmos as Liberation Vehicle
Th - Workshop: GUI integration in set-design: designing & animating assets for in-picture HUD interface / composite shots (students will need to bring assets to class for use during the workshop).

Week 6: Arrivals
Tu - The Stakes of Arrival to Earth
Th - Workshop: Green screen workshop and mattes.

Week 7: Critiques
draft sequences and rough composite/VFX shots & sound-assets

Week 8: Lost
Tu -Isolation in the void.
Th - Workshop: Compositing, blending, and in-camera techniques for visual-abstraction for use in GUI elements, space elements, etc. (students will need to bring assets to class for use during the workshop)..

Week 9: In Space
Tu - Adrift
Th - Workshop TBD

Week 10: Critiques
finished sequences with finished composite/VFX shots and sound-design
