OVERVIEW:
Sound design plays a crucial role in media production and has
opened up new structural possibilities for narrative strategies. A critical
and historical review of sound design and a production methodology component.
Critical papers and sound-works, including those for short video projects,
will be required. Prerequisites: VIS 70N and VIS 174. Open to media
majors only. Two production-course limitation.
REQUIRED SUPPLIES:
Students are required to purchase the book SOUND: Documents
of Contemporary Art, edited
by Caleb Kelly. The book is being sold at the UC Bookstore and is available
at Amazon.com.
Additional readings will be handed out over the course of theReadings
must be completed for the dates assigned.
FINAL GRADE CALCULATION
50% will be based on all assigned exercises and quizzes.
20% will be based on a writing assignment.
20% will be based on class participation in discussions and critiques
10% will be based on four museum/gallery/performance visit reports
(visits to UAG and Calit2 Gallery are mandatory. Other venues may include,
but are not limited
to, MCASD, AgitProp Space, SDMA, MOCA, MOPA, HAMMER, LACMA, The Getty)
LATE-WORK POLICY:
I will only accept assignments late if you have an excused absence from
class or in an emergency situation about which you have spoken with
me directly.You will be expected to be vigilant about completing your
assignments. Failure to comply with the late-work policy will result
in a grade of zero for that assignment. Late assignments will be accepted
at Instructor’s discretion.
INSTRUCTOR WILL NOT ACCEPT
LATE FINAL PROJECTS.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Students are expected to attend all of every class meeting
unless they have received prior permission from the instructor. Attendance
will be taken at the beginning of each class meeting. If you are late
to class it is your responsibility to make sure your attendances is
acknowledged by talking to the instructor.
