Motion Design & VFX

COURSE SCHEDULE FALL 2020

October 1 - December 12, 2020
Zoom Office Hours : Mondays 4pm - 5pm | Thursdays 10:30am - 11:30am

OVERVIEW:
Artists and filmmakers have been visualizing the impossible since the inception of motion-pictures and photography. Motion design and visual effects allow artists to interrupt reality, instead presenting ingenious illusions that propel and inspire our imaginations. Students will learn foundational motion-graphics and visual effects strategies & theories, including image compositing, matte-design, and fundamentals of 3D modeling & animation.

REQUIRED SUPPLIES:
For zoom classes: working webcam and ability to share-screen.
For coursework: Access to Adobe Creative Cloud software, in particular Photoshop, AfterEffects, PremierePro. Tripod or other stable camera surface.
Recommended: Enrollment in free Educational License for Maxon Cinema 4D (students may also use Blender or Maya, though workshops will only be offered in Cinema 4D) FINAL GRADE CALCULATION 60% will be based on all assigned exercises and quizzes. 40% will be based on class participation in discussions and critiques

FINAL GRADE CALCULATION
60% will be based on all assigned exercises and quizzes.
40% will be based on class participation in discussions and critiques

REMOTE LEARNING
Students should not enroll in any courses that conflict. Though courses will be taught remotely, there is an expectation that students are participating in the courses live unless extenuating circumstances prevent this. Extenuating circumstances would be: a difference in timezone more than 4 hours, medical/health matters, or limited access to resources (wifi access, laptop, etc). Exceptions will not be made for students who choose to enroll in overlapping courses. The content of our courses often needs to be discussed, critiqued and worked through as a group. We are wanting students to find value in the remote courses we create and need to build in as much of the 'in-person' contact that we can so we can be as authentic to an art education as we can be right now.

P/NP Grade Option
During this extraordinary Fall Quarter, UCSD and the Visual Arts Department will allow students to choose a Pass/NoPass (P/NP) grading option for their classes this quarter. Instructors will not require that students enroll with a P/NP option if the student would prefer or would need a letter-grade.
IMPORTANT: It is essential that students consult with their Academic Advisors to discuss ramifications associated with choosing P/NP (or S/U) for specific courses. Deadlines: The add deadline is extended to the end of Week 3. The drop deadline, without a W, is 10/30. The undergraduate drop deadline, with a W, is 11/13. Grading Option deadline for students to change their grading options and units is 10/30.

Synchronous / Asynchronous
Our goal is to meet this class at the scheduled time in the books.. Students who can be present will likely get a lot out of being together in real-time, as routine-keeping can be really helpful. We also intend to accommodate those students who, for many legitimate reasons, will not be able to be together at the same time. Be sure to check-in regularly on Canvas and with me to make sure you are able to participate in the class as fully as possible. Important: If you are planning on taking this course asynchronously (i.e., not at the scheduled class time), you will need to present to me your plan for remote-learning this course material by the end of Week 1 (October 9).

PARTICIPATION POLICY: Participation requires active engagement in the key aspects of our course. Examples include: provide individual insight into examples shown in class, provide feedback to peers during critique, visiting Zoom Office Hours with questions or ideas to discuss, participating in the Discussion threads on Canvas. Being present during critique is important. If you are able, please make arrangements to be available in real-time and on-camera to offer feedback to your peers. Critiques and class discussions will not be recorded or shared.

LATE-WORK POLICY: I will only accept assignments late in an urgent situation about which you have messaged me directly. If you miss class on a day something is due, I will not accept your work late. Late work will be accepted at Instructor’s discretion.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Students requesting accommodations for this course due to a disability must provide a current Authorization for Accommodation (AFA) letter issued by the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) which is located in University Center 202 behind Center Hall.

Students are required to present their AFA letters to Faculty (please make arrangements to contact me privately) and to the OSD Liaison in the department in advance so that accommodations may be arranged.
