Week Zero Introduction to Sound and Recording Environments

Week 1 ­ Introduction to Sound and Recording Environments (cont'd)
We will look at early conceptual artists, composers, and multimedia pioneers who began incorporating sound into their work. Learning to record and edit basic recordings.

->Tuesday - Assignment #1: Chaos & Tranquility
Survey of contemporary and historical sound-art and sound-design.

->Thursday - Listen to Assignment #1 ; Tech fundamentals of Microphones and Audio Recording

Week 2 - Language

->Tuesday Examine and discuss artists and others who have used audio production as a primary storytelling medium with special emphasis on speech and language.
Assignment #2: "Alien Tongue"

->Thursday We will explore the meanings that sounds carry when we hear them and how to exploit the cultural and psychological meanings we find in sounds. Introduction to the fundamentals of sound-design.

Overview of Assignment #3: “2001 Space Redux”

Week 3 - Design & Abstraction
Sound as design-element.

Week 4 - Design Strategies, Synthesis, Abstraction

-> Tuesday Synthesis in Design and Production

Week 5 - Sound & Vision
Dialogue, Diegetic and Non­-diegetic sound

-> Tuesday dialogue workshop in TV studio

-> Thursday Sound design & ADR with workshop audio

Week 6- Advanced mixing in Pro Tools
Sound design and recording techniques in video & film. Using Pro Tools to edit dialog elements andadd foley, effects, and other sound cues.

-> Tuesday Advanced Sound design and audio post-production in video & film.

-> Thursday Using Pro Tools to edit dialog elements and add foley, effects, and other sound cues.

Critiques
